Sufjan Stevens has followed in the footsteps of Sinead O'Connor and written an open letter to Miley Cyrus.

Unlike O'Connor, who has now written four open letters to Cyrus about the dangers of "prostituting herself" to the music industry as well as her subsequent comments about mental illness, Stevens took the opportunity to correct the pop star over the grammar used on her song '#GetItRight', which features on her new album 'Bangerz.'

Addressing Cyrus via his official website, Stevens writes: "I can’t stop listening to #GetItRight (great song, great message, great body), but maybe you need a quick grammar lesson. One particular line causes concern: 'I been laying in this bed all night long.' Miley, technically speaking, you’ve been LYING, not LAYING, an irregular verb form that should only be used when there's an object, i.e. "I been laying my tired booty on this bed all night long"."

Stevens goes on to add, "Whatever. I’m not the best lyricist, but you know what I mean. #Get It Right The Next Time," while also introducing her to the Present Perfect Continuous Tense.

Meanwhile, this weekend saw Miley Cyrus achieve the Official UK Chart double by debuting in at Number One in both the Albums and Singles charts. The US singer's fourth album, 'Bangerz', has entered at the top spot, while 'Wrecking Ball' saw off tough competition from Eminem's 'Bezerk' and last week's Number One, 'Counting Stars' by One Republic, to debut in pole position in the Official UK Singles Chart.
