SUPER FURRIES TURN THEIR BACK ON POP!
The band reveal how they came to go for a "mellow" vibe on new album 'Love Kraft'...
SUPER FURRY ANIMALS have revealed they left a bunch of pure pop songs off their “mellow” new album ’LOVE KRAFT’.
Talking to NME.COM, the band admit they could have made a more upbeat record – but frontman Gruff Rhys said: “It’s mellow because that’s where we’re at just now.”
Rhys and guitarist Huw ‘Bunf’ Bunford admitted there was some debate about what songs should go on the record.
Bunf said: “It’s like a democracy but whoever’s got the most forceful argument wins the day. Our choosing of the actual album’s songs is a weird session of throwing your hands up in the air.”
He added: “The hardest thing is to put the damn thing together. That’s a democracy innit?”
Rhys added: "It’s not as organised as that! It is quite a slow, mellow album, a different vibe. But we left off three pop songs.”
Of the reaction the new songs have been getting at recent live shows, the star said: “Songs like ‘Zoom!’ are getting received like old songs, so that’s very exciting. We’ll keep introducing new songs as they go along. There’s a few we haven’t played yet.”
SFA premiered some of the songs during their recent Oasis support slots in Glasgow and Manchester.
Bunf said of the experience: “They were really an Oasis crowd, so, after playing seven new songs the first night, we played it differently the second night. We had to remind ourselves what our singles were, made it a bit more punter friendly. After that, there were less shouts for Oasis. But you gotta win them over, that’s where the pressure comes.”
’Love Kraft’ is released on August 22. It’s preceded by a single, ’Laser Beam’, on August 15.
The band follow up their summer festival appearances with a jaunt round the UK and Ireland.

Following that tour, the group will explore new territory. Rhys revealed: “We got a Far East tour – we’ve been to Japan, but this time we’re going to Taiwan and Hong Kong. Everytime we tour now we got to a new place. We didn’t tour America for about five years after we started.”
