Super Furry Animals’ Gruff Rhys: The impending election is ‘a severe threat to the social fabric’

The Welsh band speak out ahead of the general election

Super Furry Animals have discussed their views on the general election, and the threat of the Conservative party regaining power.

The Cardiff band, who reissue their Welsh-language album ‘Mwng’ on May 1 and are about to play their first live shows in six years, have described the election as “horrific” in a new interview.

Frontman Gruff Rhys told the Guardian, the May 7 vote was a “severe threat to the social fabric”. “Any more years for the Conservative party and it’s going to be disastrous,” he said. “The quality of life is going to go downhill very fast if they get in again.”

He added: “The cuts are getting serious now – and the cuts imposed on Wales are horrific. They’re closing birth units. People are going to start dying.”

Guitarist Huw Bunford also commented on the affect of a disenfranchised public. He said: “It’s not just the young, it’s everyone. So I don’t know, people might even not vote. Not because they’re not arsed, but just because they don’t know who to vote for.”

Earlier this month, Super Furry Animals spoke to NME about the election. “It will be the start of a revolution,” the frontman said, referring to the possibility of the Conservatives being elected.

“It’s a battle for civilisation, this election. It could be horrific if a right-wing coalition came in; it could be the end of civilisation as we know it.”

Super Furry Animals were recently announced as the final headliner of this year’s Green Man Festival, joining Hot Chip and St Vincent at the top of the bill.
