The Pipettes heat up SXSW

Headlights and Loney Dear also make temperatures rise

The Pipettes heat up SXSW
The Pipettes drew large crowds, leaving people queuing outside the door for their daytime SXSW showcase at Austin's Flamingo Cantina today (March 15).

Dressed in black-and-white polkadot mini dresses and backed by an all-male, sweater-wearing band, they broke out their best three-part harmonies and Supremes dance moves despite the sweltering heat at the Under the Radar party.

The Brighton trio ran through tracks from their debut album, 'We Are The Pipettes', including 'One Night Stand', 'Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me', and the album's title track.

"It's a bit early in the day, but we can still party," Becki Pipette told the crowd, who took her up on her advice.

After the band's performance, Gwenno Pipette told NME.COM: "It was great, everyone was dancing, and that's all we care about. We're making pop music and we wanted it to feel like a youth club disco."

Also performing at the Under the Radar party were Illinois trio Headlights, who delivered a strong set of danceable pop punctuated by accordions and cow bells.

"It was fucking hot - in two ways - the music and the temperature!" vocalist Erin Fein told NME.COM as she tore down her band's equipment after their set.

Swedish band Loney Dear also employed a cow bell, using a beer bottle in place of a drumstick to punctuate their melodic pop.

"We've played a couple of times today, so this is a bit of an experiment, but we'll do our best for you," frontman Emil Svanangen told the audience, who were enjoying the benefits of a (mostly) free bar.

"I'm a bit tired," Svanangen told NME.COM after his set. "This was our fifth performance in two days. It's been great but I'm getting a bit tired."
