MGMT played a gig at The Rio venue in Austin, Texas tonight (March 13) as part of the SXSW festival, packing out the bar and causing fans to queue round the block for a chance to see the band in action.
Playing as a five-piece, with guitarist Andrew VanWyngarden donning a fetching headband and pendant combo, the band ran through a selection of tracks mainly culled from their debut album, ’Oracular Spectacular’.
The gig was a hot ticket in town, with fans queuing around the block to see the performance. Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong, Lightspeed Champion and members of Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man managed to get inside, as did BBC Radio 1 DJs Huw Stephens and Steve Lamacq, the latter of who introduced the band on stage.
Although MGMT played soft-rock moments from their album, they interspersed the gig with guitar wig-outs and psychedelic blasts during intros, transforming the likes of ’Time To Pretend’ into a unique live experience.
The crowd lapped up the performance, with many standing on tables in attempts to get a glimpse of the fast-rising band at SXSW.
