Taylor Swift donates over £30,000 to ‘beautiful and brave’ fan battling leukaemia

Pop singer donated money to 11-year-old Naomi Oakes as she undergoes hospital treatment

Taylor Swift has donated $50,000 (£32,000) to help one of her fans who is fighting leukaemia.

The singer donated the money online after being alerted to the plight of 11-year-old Naomi Oakes. A fundraising page had been set up to aid Naomi, with friends and family setting out to get Swift’s attention and her help in promoting the page.

Naomi, it was explained, is a huge fan of Swift’s and has been using her track ‘Bad Blood’ as a “fight song” as she battles the illness. The leukaemia treatment will require up to nine months in hospital, meaning she will miss Swift’s concert in Phoenix on August 18 for which she received tickets at Christmas.

Swift made up for this, however, when she donated thousands to Naomi’s GoFundMe page yesterday (July 7). Writing to her fan, the pop star wrote: “To the beautiful and brave Naomi, I’m sorry you have to miss it, but there will always be more concerts. Let’s focus on getting you feeling better. I’m sending the biggest hugs to you and your family.”

Meanwhile, Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ is also now streaming on Apple Music after Swift convinced the company to pay artists royalties during the three-month trial period for its new streaming service.

On June 20 a spokesperson for Swift confirmed that ‘1989’ would not appear on the service when it launches on June 30. Swift later wrote an open letter to Apple criticising their new streaming service, calling it “unfair” and “disappointing”.

The tech giant had previously stated a policy of not paying musicians, producers, songwriters or rights holders during the three-month free trial of their upcoming streaming service. However, after the open letter was published, the company performed a u-turn and confirmed that it will be compensating artists during the trial.

Swift herself then changed her stance and decided to stream ‘1989’ on Apple Music, making it the first service to get hold of the hugely popular album.
