Beach Boys' Mike Love: 'I did not fire Brian Wilson' The Beach Boys Tickets
The singer says he doesn't 'have the authority' to sack Wilson
The singer defended his plans to continue touring under the Beach Boys name after the band's current 50-year anniversary, which ended in London last month, in an open letter published by the LA Times.
I did not fire Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys. I cannot fire Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys. I am not his employer. I do not have such authority. And even if I did, I would never fire Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys. I love Brian Wilson.
Brian Wilson had told CNN that he is gutted Love won't tour with the rest of the band. "I'm disappointed and can't understand why Mike doesn't want to tour with Al, David and me," he said. "After all, we are the real Beach Boys."
But Mike Love explained in his letter that the 50-year anniversary tour was just meant for a "limited run" and he revealed dates with a different line-up of the band were booked before the tour began.
"Like any good party, no one wanted it to end," Love wrote. "However, that was impossible, given that we had already set up shows in smaller cities with a different configuration of the band - the configuration that had been touring together every year for the last 13 years."
He added: "It is not feasible, both logistically and economically, for the 50th anniversary tour to play these markets."
Brian Wilson previously said he wants to make a new "exciting rock and roll album" to follow up the reunion record, which could be released next year. However, Love has now said he would only be interested in recording another album if he could "write some songs with Brian". The pair only collaborated on three songs on the last LP.
