Beatles' John Lennon 'forgiven' for 'Jesus' claim

Vatican newspaper says Lennon was just showing off

Semi-official Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano has run an article forgiving the late Beatle John Lennon for a controversial statement he made in 1966, when he claimed that his band were "more popular than Jesus".

The article in the newspaper, which normally reports on the comings and goings of the Pope, said that Lennon had just been showing off and praised the band.

The article said that Lennon's comments had been "showing off, bragging by a young English working-class musician who had grown up in the age of Elvis Presley and rock and roll and had enjoyed unexpected success".

The newspaper was marking the 40th anniversary of the band's self-titled album known as 'The White Album'.

Lennon's 1966 comments, made in an interview with the London Evening Standard, had criticised religion.

"Christianity will go," he said. "It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue with that; I'm right and I will be proved right.

"We're more popular than Jesus now. I don't know which will go first - rock 'n' roll or Christianity. Jesus was all right but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It's them twisting it that ruins it for me."

Nice to see the church keeping up with the times by commenting on something that heppend 40 years ago. Also, I don't think John Lennon needed 'forgiving' for anything but it's nice of them to patronise him nonetheless.

Funny how they didn't seem to notice the comment about Jesus's disciples being thick and twisting religion. Who do you think he was referring to?

I wonder if people will still be listening to The Beatles two thousand years after their arrival....

Well, it took Morrissey quite a while to forgive Jesus, so it only makes sense that JC's people were just as tardy with their forgiveness.

So hang out gazplayford Christianity with it's billions of flowers and a book which is is the biggest selling book ever is smaller than a band I'm glad people aren't as intolerant as you.

The Beatles and their influence were/are bigger than Jesus in the western world, the 42 years between the event and this comment doesn't even come close to the light years behind society the vatican are... irrelevant doesn't even come close. and doesn't the bible say that only God can judge, but also God always forgives... the big man surely wouldn't have held a grudge for all this time!

Impressive though, I mean it took 1900 years for the jews no longer to be seen as Christ's killers and several hundred years for Galileo to be let off the hook. At this rate Madonna will have an audience with the Pope by the end of the year...

Hmmm, I'd check your stats about "hundreds leaving the church" while Jesus is more important to more people across the world than the Beatles are. The church is growing because people are realising that there's got to be more than this.Drop your perceptions of the church and organised religion, just read what Jesus actually says.

SEA SALT STEVE - are you stupid? Of course the Beatles will be listened to in two thousand years.. Its The Beatles we're talking about here.. you know, only the biggest band of all time! And what is this story aout anyway? Anyone that knows the first thing about The Beatles and Lennon knows that he DIDNT EVEN FUCKING SAY THAT!!!! Just watch The Beatles Anthology, it shows the actual quote that he said and he clearly doesnt claim that they were bigger than Jesus.

Just watch the news today and you'll see what effect that Christianity has on us in comparison to the Beatles....Wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan, The Credit Crunch i.e. CHRISTmas spending oh and Terrorism....The Beatles? You hear more about the Rolling Stones and see their influence than the Beatles.
