The cast for the theatrical version of Backbeat has been announced.

The play, an adaptation of the 1994 film about The Beatles' early days in Hamburg, is set to open at Citizens Theatre in Glasgow next February.

It will feature The History Boys' actor Andrew Knott playing John Lennon, a role he describes as something he's wanted to work on for years.

"It feels like I've been studying for most of my life to play the role of John Lennon," he declared. "I've had pictures of him and The Beatles on my bedroom wall from a really young age, and have always been fascinated with the music of The Beatles and the story that surrounds them, so I feel privileged to be part of the telling of that story on the Glasgow stage."

Alex Robertson will play Lennon's friend and one-time Beatles bassist Stuart Sutcliffe, while Daniel Healy plays Paul McCartney and Jamie Blackley plays George Harrison.

The play is set to feature a live band, and runs from February 9 until March 6. See Citz.co.uk for more information.
