Liverpool to host year of celebrations for The Beatles 50th anniversary

Gigs, talks and a convention will take place to honour the Fab Four

The Beatles will be honoured during their 50th anniversary year by their hometown Liverpool with a host of music and film related events throughout 2012.

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra will perform The Two of Us: The Lennon and McCartney Songbook in June and in December the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall will host a Beatles weekend. The Guardian reports that Michael Eakin, chief executive of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, has commented: "We're delighted to be playing our part in this special Beatles anniversary, paying our tribute to the four Liverpool lads whose music continues to have an extraordinary impact around the world."

August 19 is the 50th anniversary of The Beatles' very first show at the legendary Cavern. This will be honoured by International Beatles Week, with gigs, talks and a convention. Then the 'Love Me Do' weekend takes place at Albert Dock on October 5-7 and celebrates the release of the band's debut single.

Earlier this month Paul McCartney revealed that The Beatles considered reforming while they were all still alive, but decided against it in case it ruined their legacy. The singer, who released his new studio album 'Kisses On The Bottom' on February 6, told Rolling Stone that the Fab Four had discussed reuniting on several occasions but the arguments to do so were "never convincing enough".
