The Bee Gees' Robin Gibb is gravely ill in hospital after contracting pneumonia in his battle with cancer.

The singer, who has battled colon and liver cancer in recent years, is in a coma at a medical facility in west London, reports the Press Association.

His family, including his Bee Gees bandmate Barry and wife Dwina, are thought to be keeping vigil at his bedside.

The 62-year-old had appeared to be winning his battle with colon and liver cancer, with reports suggesting he was in remission as recently as last month. However, the latest deterioration in his health comes amid reports of a second tumour being discovered by doctors.

Gibb's twin brother and bandmate Maurice died from the same bowel condition that initially led doctors to treat Robin.

Gibb's career in music began when he formed The Bee Gees with Barry and Maurice in 1958. The group went onto to enjoy huge success spanning six decades, scoring hits with tracks such as 'Massachusetts', 'Stayin' Alive' and 'I've Gotta Get A Message To You'.

Gibb had recently composed his classical debut, 'The Titanic Requiem', to mark the 100th anniversary of the nautical disaster.

The score, which he worked on with son Robin-John, was premiered at an event in central London on Thursday (April 12), although Robin was too ill to attend.
