The Northwich boys record in new [b]Big Mushroom[/b] studios
The Charlatans will release a new album in the autumn, their first new material since 1997's number one 'Tellin' Stories'.
The band have just finished building their own Big Mushroom studios in Northwich, Cheshire, and are now in the process of recording the new album - their first with keyboardist Tony Rogers replacing original Charlatans keyboardist Rob Collins, who died in a car crash in July 1996 while their last album was being recorded. The new album, the band's sixth studio LP, will be mixed at New York's legendary Electric Ladyland studios (built by Jimi Hendrix).
A spokeswoman for the band confirmed work had started on the as-yet untitled album which is scheduled for a September release through MCA/Geffen. A single will precede its release in August.
The band are set to premier their new songs during appearances this summer at the joint Reading (August 27-29) and Leeds 99 festivals (28-30).
Meanwhile, the Charlatans' accountant of four years has admitted swindling almost #300,000 from the band. Trevor Williams, aged 48, of Lewin Street, Middlewich, admitted taking the money when he appeared before magistrates in Northwich, Cheshire last week (April 14).
None of the band appeared at the hearing, but their manager Steve Harrison was there to see the case get committed to Chester Crown court for sentence.
A date has yet to be set for the sentence procedure.
Williams' dishonesty came to light last June when Cheshire police's fraud unit launched a probe into his business affairs. The investigations also revealed he had stolen nearly #70,000 from two other clients using his business, Trevor Williams Accounting Services, based in Middlewich.
A spokesman for the band's record company MCA told NME: "This court case hasn't affected the band at all. They've been too busy working on the new album."
