The Charlatans' singer Tim Burgess dedicated part of their set to their drummer Jon Brookes, who was recently diagnosed with a brain tumour, as they kicked off this year's London Oxjam gigs tonight (September 27).

The Verve drummer Pete Salisbury filled in for Brookes as the band performed in front of book shelves and record stands at the Oxfam shop on Kingsland Road in Dalston.

Admitting the events had been tough for the band, Burgess told the crowd: "It's been a funny couple of weeks. This next one is for Jon. It is called 'My Foolish Pride'."

The band went on to showcase three further tracks from their recent album 'Who We Touch''Smash The System', 'Your Pure Soul' and 'Love Is Ending' – alongside their classic hits, including 'The Only One I Know', 'North Country Boy' and 'Can't Get Out Of Bed'.

Other than thanking the crowd, Burgess, who was sporting long black hair and a brown leather jacket, kept chat to a minimum throughout their set, which was watched by Badly Drawn Boy's Damon Gough'.

Rounding off their show with 'You Cross My Path' closer 'This Is The End', the singer also took time to praise their stand-in drummer. "I just want to say thanks to Pete Salisbury."

The Charlatans played:

'Smash The System'
'My Foolish Pride'
'Your Pure Soul'
'Tellin' Stories'
'Can't Get Out Of Bed'
'Oh! Vanity'
'The Only One I Know'
'North Country Boy'
'Bird Reprise'
'Love Is Ending'
'Blackened Blue Eyes'
'This Is The End'

Earlier Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip warmed up proceedings by performing tracks from their 2008 debut 'Angles' and their recent album 'The Logic Of Chance', including hit single 'Thou Shalt Always Kill' and the Radiohead-sampling 'A Letter From God To Man'.

The Horrors' Tom Furse played a special guest DJ slot which featured a series of Motown tracks and The Beatles' classic 'I Am The Walrus'.
