CORAL'S MIDSUMMER BUMMER!
The band put up £40,000 of their own cash to stage the hugely successful 'Midsummer Night's Scream'...
The band decided to absorb the hit because they were so desperate to stage the gig in New Brighton.
"We’re spending loads of our own money but it’s not about the money, it’s about putting on a special day, something to remember," keyboardist Nick Power told NME just before the show.
The outlay came because to host the gig Coral had to erect a purpose built tent and ferry-in every last stage bolt and screw. Despite a sell-out audience of 6,000, this wasn't enough to make-up the cash shortfall.
"They were told to do it over two days to cover costs," manager Alan Wills said. "But they didn't want to do that. They wanted to make it special, a one-off in their hometown."
He added that Coral would play a series of secret shows throughout the summer in order to make up the shortfall. These will be announced with a day's notice in the local press around the venue they choose.
Coral release new album 'Magic And Medicine' on July 28.
