The Courteeners are involved in a forthcoming 'Coronation Street' storyline that will see two of the soap's residents split up.

According to The Sun jealous soap opera character David Platt hacks into his girlfriend Tina McIntyre's emails after he hears she's been chatting to an ex-boyfriend online.

He then discovers that the Manchester rockers, who are often heard playing in the programme's Rovers Return pub, garage and kebab shop, are Tina's favourite band, and tries to win her back by buying tickets to see them live.

The pair split up, however, when David's devious behaviour is eventually revealed.

The Courteeners-based storyline is set to unfold throughout this week's episodes of the ITV show.

The band's frontman Liam Fray told NME.COM: "'Corrie' is real institution isn't it? So we're proud to get a mention in it, proper impressed. I just wish they'd bring the ghost of Ivy Tilsley (famous character from the 70s and 80s) back."
