Liam Fray of The Courteeners has revealed how breaking his ankle while on holiday in the Caribbean helped improve the sound of the band's new album.

Fray, who is the frontman of the Manchester band, revealed the showbiz story of his leg break in a new interview with Louder Than War. Chatting about his belief that being forced to sit and being unable to move helped him focus on his new songs, Fray revealed the amusing story behind his injury, "I broke my ankle on New Year’s Day 2012, and it was a bad break – torn ligaments on the inside and out. I was playing football in the Caribbean. I was on this island for New Year, and there was basically shitloads of famous people there… I found it funny, I don’t want to go namechecking but it was mental."

Opening up on who he was holidaying alongside, Fray continued: "Lou Reed was there. We got chatting and he asked me to play a little set, he’s got an arts club. So that was like, 'OK'. I was in New York with just an acoustic, Payney (Adam Payne, touring keyboardist with The Courteeners) was there, so it was just us, a guitar and a piano. Lou Reed, Norah Jones, We Are Scientists… it was like a pissed up Open Mic night but with Lou Reed on the front row."

Meanwhile, The Courteeners are on course to achieve their first Official UK Number One album this Sunday, with their album 'Anna' currently outselling its nearest competition.

Should 'Anna' stay at the top until Sunday, the Manchester band will replace Biffy Clyro's 'Opposites' at the top of the Official UK Album Chart. The album follows the success of their two previous Top 10 albums, 2008’s 'St Jude' and 2010's 'Falcon'. Lead singer Liam Fray makes no secret about his desire for chart success with the new record, telling NME this week: "I never started this band to be a member of the 'alternative' crowd. I want people to hear our music. You don't make a living limping into the charts at Number 89."
