The Cribs: 'Nirvana wouldn't get signed today' The Cribs Tickets
Guitarist Ryan Jarman says there's 'no time' for underground bands in 2012
The Cribs' Ryan Jarman has said he doesn't think Nirvana would get signed if they were starting out today.
The guitarist believes that underground bands starting out in 2012 don't have the same opportunities as groups did in the past, and he blames people's short-attention span for the change.
He told Bang Showbiz: "Bands like Nirvana, Sonic Youth, the bands that come up from the underground and cross over, the problem is there's no time to do that now.
"Even with underground bands, if people like them, they totally get over exposed really quickly, then people move on to the next thing. That's my only concern; that bands can't come up through those channels anymore."
Jarman says people are too concerned with purchasing the odd single, rather than a full album, and thinks music lovers can't fully understand an artist or band unless they listen to their full body of work.
He added: "It's about the single now, but I think people have got a shorter attention span now, the single, to us, is usually the one we are least interested in. The stuff you put on the album, that's the most satisfying stuff. So, it would a real be a shame if it went that way."
Since the time of writing, Ryan Jarman has responded to this widely reported news story. You can see his tweets on the subject below.
The Cribs will release a compilation album, 'Payola', in February. 'Payola' will mark 10 years as a band for the Wakefield trio but is not a straightforward hits album. Some of the band's biggest songs are left out in favour of fan favourites and album tracks.
The band will also headline an NME Awards Show gig at London's O2 Academy Brixton. Tickets for The Cribs and all of the NME Awards shows are available to buy now by clicking here.
