THE CULT have reformed and are finally back in studio working through demos for a forthcoming album, nme.com can reveal.

Founder members singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy have been joined by latter-day drummer Matt Sorum, formerly with Guns N' Roses, and bassist [/b]Martin La Noble[/b] of Porno For Pyros.

They have been in a studio in LA for the past couple of weeks with an unidentified producer and though no release date has yet been decided, the album will come out through Lava Records.

Meanwhile, Astbury's new solo album 'Spirit/Light/Speed' will be released through Beggars Banquet on July 3, and the band have recorded a cover of Diane Warren's 'Painted On My Heart' for inclusion on the soundtrack to Nicolas Cage's new film 'Gone In 60 Seconds'.

Astbury took time out from the sessions this week to join former Doors keyboardist Ray Manzerek and guitarist Robby Krieger onstage at an LA show. According to US website www.launch.com, a completely bald Astbury joined the pair at the legendary Whiskey A Go-Go to work through Doors classics 'Roadhouse Blues' and 'Light My Fire'.

Kreiger had been performing at the venue with his new band.
