The Dead Weather played a storming eight-song set at London's Shoreditch Church last night (October 31) – causing chaotic scenes outside the venue as hundreds of fans queued around the block for the chance to see Jack White and co play.

White had previously announced the free gig in an interview with NME Radio DJ Iain Baker, and the show was broadcast live in its entirety on NME Radio.

Although The Dead Weather weren't due on stage until 8pm (GMT), fans began queuing outside the church as early as 3pm. Many of those lucky enough to gain entry were wearing fancy dress – at singer Alison Mosshart's request – to mark Halloween. White had also promised to reward "the person who's covered in blood the most" with a unique prize at the gig.

The band too were in fancy dress for the evening, with all four members taking to the stage wearing ghoulish masks and makeup. Mosshart was made-up to look like a witch, while White – who alternated between singing, drumming and playing lead guitar – wore a pagan mask. The White Stripes and Raconteurs' mainman stuck to his word regarding the prize, inviting two bloodily-attired fans onstage before final song 'Treat Me Like Your Mother' to give them each a rare 3-inch single.

The Dead Weather showcased two unreleased songs during their set – the blues-based 'Jawbreaker', and 'I Can't Hear You' which featured a pre-programmed drum beat that allowed White to play guitar for the first part of the track. Elsewhere, they aired covers of Pentagram's 'Forever My Queen' and Them's 'You Just Can't Win'.

As previously reported on NME.COM, White has been using Shoreditch Church as a pop-up store for his record label Third Man Records for the past two days.
