Frontman blasts fans for being too quiet at Isle Of Wight festival

The Enemy's Tom Clarke has slammed the crowd at the recent (June 14) Sex Pistols headline slot at the Isle Of Wight Festival for being too sedate.

Clarke also criticised security guards at the event, but praised the band themselves.

"Stood watching Sex Pistols Isle Of Wight," he wrote on a recent MySpace bulletin. "The sound was spot on, the band were spot on, [Johnny] Rotten was bang on, snarling like it was 1976.

"Everyone around us was steaming, having a mint night. Now, don't get me wrong, I know security are there for everyone's safety, but the security steward near us was taking anyone dancing aside and telling them to stop.

"No one was allowed on anyone's shoulders, and just as Rotten tried to rouse the crowd and get us to step out of our 'so reserved' British shells and have a good time, some old geezer behind me and Liam [Watts, drummer] taps us on the shoulder and tells us to "SSSSSHHHH" because we were singing along to 'God Save The Queen'.

"I wasn't alive in '76, and this geezer was. He probably saw the '60s, when people thought music could genuinely change world politics, and he saw the punk movement tear away from romantic pop slop and say, 'Fuck the rules, fuck the system and lets go and be individual and have a good time'.

"This geezer lived through some of the most important decades of music, politics and society has ever seen and somehow, [he] inexplicably managed to miss the point completely.

"Most of the crowd were top, taking no notice of the over-cautious security staff. But a lot were doing exactly as they were told and were quietly enjoying them.

"HOW CAN YOU ENJOY THE MOST IMPORTANT PUNK BAND EVER, QUIETLY?"

"In my humble view this country, and our freedom to have a laff, is being strangled by red tape. Health and safety madness. Dancing is not dangerous. Never was.

"If we can't have fun at a Sex Pistols gig, where are we all meant to go to let off some steam?"

I think, NME, you'll find he wasn't saying at any point the crowd were too quiet, his main point was the security making people quieten down and so on.

Be quiet small child. Rotten is a cock, his band made 1 album and for some unbeknown reason they are still able to gig it 30 years later. Go beat each other off...

whats with these ugh drown in a puddle type comments. i think he has a fair point, even if you think tom clarke is a dwarfy, mouthy little twat, and you think Johnny Rotton is a fucking cock (like i do), the man has a point whether you thought the pistols were/are any good or not, they did embody a very important spirit of rebellion, and the fact that they can still transmit that message to a younger generation cant be a bad thing, if you were a fan and someone told you to shush during your favourite artist would you take it lightly? i certaintly wouldnt i'd tell them to fuck right off

I was there, and neither myself nor my friends bothered to watch the Pistols. Don't get me wrong, the album was seminal, if a bit samey, but it's not 1977 any more,a mad old enough to be my dad trying to be controversial doesn't just isn't my idea of entertainment.

How many times have you been at a gig and some twat of a security guard has either replicated the above or more? I say to many times, this also comes in the form of couples. You know the types who just want to stand quietly at the barrier and not be touched....bloody monkeys! The biggest atmospheres are created by everyone coming out of there shells and letting go. Good old Tom has stumbled upon a huge problem in this country, both general people and over zealous security personel, sort it out!

i was there, and it was horrible how quiet the crowd was. where has the punk spirit gone?... people these days are too caught up in their generic indie bands to care about seeing a legend like this.

I was there, had a fantastic time. However i was also there at Brixton last November when the Pistols started up again. The atmosphere at Brixton that night was electric, it was like watching history, and i had a bloody good night. But at the Isle of Wight the atmosphere wasn't as great, but has no body twigged that the whole weekend was more than just a Sex Pistols gig? Unlike the Brixton gigs not everyone has come to just see them. Some of the crowd probably fucking hate The Pistols, if so they're not gona wana make loads of noise and start a riot. In my opinion The Pistols are not a festival band, however they put on a great show and i enjoyed it thouroughly. Fair play to Tom Clarke on the security though, health and safety has gone way too far in the country.

Tom has a point here, Yes hes annoying, pompous and he truly looks like a rodent but its very true that health and safety arseholes are trying to sanitize everything, including rock-one of the few things that benefits from an element of danger.
