The Futureheads have been announced as support to Red Hot Chili Peppers at the US band's Sunderland Stadium of Light show on June 24.
The Futureheads have previously played the hometown stadium in 2005, before the final game of the 2004-2005 football season.
Of their return to the venue, Barry Hyde of the band said: "I'm absolutely over the moon to be supporting the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the Stadium of Light. The Stadium is an icon of the city and playing there will be a thrill and a joy."
Gary Hutchinson, Sunderland AFC commercial director, added: "This is the first time a local band has played a part in the concerts at the stadium. To have The Futureheads supporting the Red Hot Chili Peppers is fantastic news for Sunderland and is testament to the strength of our regional music scene."
The band's new, acapella album 'Rant', is out now. As well as the Red Hot Chili Peppers show, The Futureheads will be staging their own food festival this summer. Speaking to NME Hyde revealed that the band will be staging the event to help celebrate the Olympics, adding that the band are also working with their local council to try and drive up attendance at local gigs.
He said: "We've got so many plans for this year. We're putting on our festival Split for the fourth time. We're doing a massive food event in Sunderland in June, which we'll be performing at. It's all to do with the Olympics. Our world is evolving in quite an unusual way. We're always working with Sunderland council to try and increase the number of people at gigs."
The band are currently touring the UK in support of 'Rant', their fifth album. The gigs run until April 13 when the band play Manchester's Royal Northern College of Music.
Meanwhile, Red Hot Chili Peppers play Knebworth on June 23 , Sunderland's Stadium Of Light on June 24 and Dublin's Croke Park on June 26.
