Horrors lambast Facebook, MySpace and blog culture The Horrors Tickets

Web 2.0 has destroyed underground music, they argue

The Horrors' Joshua Hayward (aka Joshua Third) has accused social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace of killing off good underground music.

The guitarist said that, although he supports the effect the internet has had on communication, he doesn't believe it is doing new music any good.

"I'm going to destroy the internet," he told the Independent. "Every social network site, every blog. No-one's happier now because of it. It's really interesting that now we have complete communication, we have less good underground bands. How is that?"

Elsewhere in the interview, the band's Rhys 'Spider' Webb took a swipe at The Killers, questioning their integrity.

"I'm sick of reading about bands like The Killers," he said. "I don't believe in it for a second."

The Horrors are set to play a headline show at the London Electric Ballroom tonight (June 5).

I don't think The Horrors have a leg to stand on when it comes to accusing people of ruining music...

I tend to agree, it's sad that the days of leafing through dusty tracks at record shops are long gone. In some ways it makes it easier to find great music, but it also means it's impossible to discover anything genuinely new...

Rubbish - there are 2 levels of sites - the pretendrs, and the real underground ones. Check out cherryekko.com for some real underground music!

Fuckin hell! Do this band not realise that those very network sites played a HUGE role in making them what they are today?I agree that these sites are less special than fanzines, indie mags etc. but they've also helped tons of bands get attention who probably wouldn't of otherwise. Arctic monkeys anyone?

Funny statement coming from a band that was totally made by this kind of sites. They owe their entire existence to myspace and such.

This is the single most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. If anything "blog culture" allows great underground bands that otherwise would wallow in obscurity, to get discovered by thousands of people.

Wrong! no we don't have "less good underground bands", you twats, don't try and be some kind of spokesmen for the people with such un-educated opinions. When you we're back playing in little Southend basements you we're all over these sites like flys to shit. Great underground bands are all there but just hidden amongts many bedroom bandits! You've got more sifting to do. Get out and see more gigs. Sweaty little venues are where underground music lives and always has. You lot we're only doing it yourselves 5 seconds ago but now you think you're worlds away you think it no longer exists.

Funny thing... there was a REAL underground band called THE HORRORS that were out on IN THE RED RECORDS (these "horrors" could learn a thing or two from the other "horrors about what underground really is). These guys should not be in a music magazines, they should be in a fashion magazines. These pups are about as underground as Yanni

What a tool - The Horrors have a myspace page. Is that why their new album is so crappy and overrated?

Bullsh*t. If you can't find decent music to listen to you aren't looking hard enough. "Underground" or otherwise. I've discovered more great music via the internet (blogs, forums, etc) than I ever did without it (hard to imagine those dark ages now). You'd think The Horrors would be able to find the music that lurks in the dark corners of the internet. Apparently not. Dig deeper, Joshua!

I agree with him, he may be shooting himself in the foot to people who don't like his music (personally I love them), but its true, good music and talented musicians have been diluted into a sea of artists who make music in their bedroom then hope for the hits on Myspace, thinking they'll hit the big time. A good musician shouldn't advertise, he should be discovered through open mics and local gigs.

Poppycock. It is far easier to find new music thanks to the advent of social meeja sites like Last.fm; my friends are always tipping me off to new music via Facebook statuses; and I've found a fuckton of underground, unknown artists on MySpace. I know I'm not alone. They should go back to ripping off Echo & The Bunnymen, they're clearly better at that than forming sound judgements about technology.

It's really funny how the horrors "discovered" music like MBV, Joy Division, Bunnymen etc then lecture the rest of us about what "underground" means. I look forward to them discovering sonic youth and telling us all about how dissonance and pastoral textures being integral to modern rock sounds.
