Last Shadow Puppets warm-up for festivals with 'stand up' show

The Last Shadow Puppets warmed-up for the Reading And Leeds Festivals with a gig in Oxford last night (August 20).

Playing the city's New Theatre, Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner and The Rascals' Miles Kane were joined onstage by their backing band - including Simian Mobile Disco's James Ford on drums - and an orchestra.

The duo performed their whole of their debut album, along with several covers including David Bowie's 'In The Heat Of The Morning', 's Burt Bacharach and Hal David-penned 'My Little Red Book (All I Do IS Talk About You)' and Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's 'Paris Summer'.

Introducing the latter, Turner joked with the crowd that: "We didn't do this last night in Portsmouth - we thought 'Let's try it in Oxford, they're much more open'. This is only our second gig, can you believe it?"

The pair also included B-sides 'Gas Dance' and 'Hang The Cyst' in the hour long set, and during the second song Kane took on the theatre's establishment, adding a rock 'n' roll feel to the show.

Complaining loudly after he'd been told to sit down during the song, one member of the audience audibly called the security guard a "cockhead".

Stopping the track, The Rascals' frontman wryly asked from the stage: "Who's the cockhead? It's a good name. You gonna get chucked out?" He then declared: "You can stand up! Let's all stand up!"

With the audience on their feet for the show's climax, Turner joked of the fan "he'll be telling people that for years, 'I stood up'," before the band wrapped things up with recent single 'Standing Next To Me' and closer 'In My Room'.

The pair are now set to play this weekend's (August 22-24) Reading And Leeds Festivals at Leeds on Friday (22) and Reading on Sunday (24) on the NME/Radio 1 Stage.
