Pete Doherty reveals Libertines Reading And Leeds Festival offer

Frontman says he and Carl Barat have had an offer

Pete Doherty has revealed that The Libertines were offered the chance to headline the Reading And Leeds Festivals this August – but had to turn it down because Carl Barat wasn't happy to go ahead with a reunion.

In an interview in this week's NME, on UK newsstands tomorrow (February 11), the frontman said he was keen for the reunion to go ahead, but the plan was scuppered after Barat's concerns about his old partner's "energy".

"We had some ridiculous offers to headline Reading," he said. "Like £2 million to headline this festival, £1 million to headline that festival. I said, 'Why don't we just do it? Let's get the old band back together.'

"He (Barat) said, 'We have to be friends, we can't just do it for the money'. I said, 'OK, let's be friends! Friends who go and make lots of money', because I haven't got any money and I know he's skint.

"I had to go and see an energy consultant, some new age guru who is going to measure my energy levels and see if I'm surrounded by darkness.

"If I am I'm not allowed to go near Carl because I'll tap into his good energy and I'll sap all the good energy and bring nothing but darkness into his life."

See the new issue of NME, out tomorrow, for the full interview. Watch a video from the cover shoot now.

Meanwhile, NME.COM has a song from Pete Doherty's forthcoming solo album, 'Grace/Wastelands', available to download free.

To download the song, 'New Love Grows On Trees', head to the NME Office Blog – where three further songs from 'Grace/Wastelands' can be heard streaming.

Measure energy levels? Wouldn't a drug test suffice?

Knew it! I've had a niggling feeling something was happening in The Libertines camp. Seems odd that the person who's got a lot on his plate, Pete, is the one keenest to get it going. He's in a better place now anyway, from what I've been seeing/reading. Carl should do it too, he needs to do something...I aren't enamoured with this association with Glasvegas, he's way fucking too good to be hanging about with those one trick ponies. The rhythm section would be happy to play I'm sure! Reformation, a tour, a new LP...they'd be massive all over again.

if the Libertines headlined Reading id of sold my ticket, i would class them as 'big enough' to headline, compare them to last years headliners, they are nothing.

I hear the best songs are written when a large amount of money enters the equation! Doherty has a history of making shit up. I'm not saying that the Reading/Leeds thing isn't true but there's no way Carl said any of that with the malice that Doherty is insinuating. He's a really nice guy.

So if I've read this correctly, as long as Doherty is surrounded by 'light', that means he has positive energy and The Libertines will reform. Now I ask myself - 'how much do I want this?'I do own a couple of torches... Nah, can't be arsed. Why don't they just get that bloke from Razorlight to fill in - I hear he's quite good.

"they'd be massive all over again" - they weren't massive in the first place...they are just media whores...let's see who remembers the libertines in 25 years time. they're more like a cult band like The Fall, but without any of the talent.

Most folk that have written comments on here probably only heard about the Libertines when Pete's face was plastered over the tabloids, folk have to remember that they had one good album and the other album was mediocre. magicalmrmariefalis - Get a fucking grip of yourself ya silly wee arsehole, you sound as if your about 10 years old.
