Carl Barat has explained why he and Pete Doherty will not be getting The Libertines together for shows in the near future.

The band had been rumoured to be scheduling more gigs since their Reading And Leeds Festivals shows last August. Last month their management issued a statement saying no new shows were on the cards, and now Barat has elaborated on the reasons.

"Just to quell any speculation, there will not be any Libertines shows this summer," Barat wrote in an email message to fans. "As perfect as last year was, Peter and I have not written anything new together at this point."

He added: "We are all busy doing very different things separately. Truly moving as it was to play Reading, Leeds and the [warm-up shows at the London] Forum it would not be right to do this every year without new material as I'm sure most would agree."

He did, however, say he hoped there was some kind of future for The Libertines. "You never know though," he wrote, "some day I hope we'll write the next album."

Barat is now preparing to tour the UK solo this March and April. He has also announced plans for a free secret gig to take place in a London pub on March 21. He wrote that he will debut new material at the gig, which will have a capacity of 50 people.

"This little show will be recorded and form part of my new EP [released digitally on April 4] which will also feature the new studio tracks 'Grimaldi', 'Death Fires Burn At Night', 'Sing For My Supper' and 'This Is The Song'," he explained.

'Grimaldi' is likely to be a version of an unreleased Libertines song called 'The Ballad Of Grimaldi'. Doherty released his own version of the track in 2009, while a live version of the song by him is also included on a new benefit album, 'Raise The Bar', released via

The album has been released with the aim of helping save the London pub and music venue The Torriano from closure.
