The Maccabees brought the first night of The Great Escape to a close tonight (May 14), showcasing seven songs from their new album.

The Brighton five-piece attracted a huge crowd at the Corn Exchange for the opening night of the three-day festival in Brighton.

Kicking off with recent single 'No Kind Words' from their second album 'Wall Of Arms' the band laced their 13-song set with a further six new tracks including 'Can You Give It?', 'Kiss And Resolve' and 'William Powers'.

They whipped up the crowd early on with an energetic opening before they slowed the pace with 'Toothpaste Kisses', which sparked a huge singalong.

Guitarist Felix White seemed overwhelmed by the crowd before he launched into B-side 'Accordion Song'.

He told them: "We've played Brighton a few times but this is the biggest crowd we have ever played in front of. Thank you so much for coming down."

The Maccabees played:

'No Kind Words'
'Tissue Shoulders'
'Can You Give It?'
'Kiss And Resolve'
'Toothpaste Kisses'
'Precious Time'
'Accordion Song'
'William Powers'
'Young Lions'
'First Love'
'Love You Better'

Earlier, Portland five-piece Hockey played a chaotic set at the 'Hectors House' pub.

The hotly tipped act had fans dancing on the tables as they rolled through a host of tracks from their forthcoming debut 'Mind Chaos', including singles 'Learn To Lose' and 'Too Fake'.

Singer Benjamin Grubin, who donned a light blue headband, was on fine form, taking up drumming duties on a number of tracks as the band wrapped up their current tour.

"This is one best of the crowds we've ever played in front of," he declared.

Over at The Revenge bar Welsh newcomers The Joy Formidable made an impressive debut at the festival, with many fans rushing to the front for their early performance.

They played a slew of tracks including single 'Whirring'.

The day kicked off with a DJ set from newcomer Frankmusik at Audio.
