The Maccabees, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Big Pink and The Drums kicked off the Shockwaves NME Awards Tour 2010 tonight (February 4) at the O2 Academy in Newcastle.

Headliners The Maccabees surprised the crowd by playing a cover of Orange Juice's classic 'Rip It Up' as well as crowd favourites 'X-Ray' and 'No Kind Words'.

First up, The Drums played to an almost capacity crowd. The New York four-piece played an energetic set to launch their first tour of the UK - thanking the crowd for taking part in their first British gig run.

"It's our first time here... ever," frontman Jonathan Pierce explained to the crowd before delighting the audience with songs including 'I Felt Stupid' and set closer 'Forever And Ever'.

The Drums played:

'It Will All End In Tears'
'Best Friend'
'Submarine'
'I Felt Stupid'
'Make You Mine'
'Book Of Stories'
'Let's Go Surfing'

Next up The Big Pink played a six-song set that included a cover of The Breeders' 'Cannonball'. The rest of their set comprised songs from their 2009 debut album 'A Brief History Of Love' including biggest hit 'Dominos', which closed their set.

"It's fucking good to be on the NME tour!" shouted singer/guitarist Robbie Furze before playing the song - an early contender for anthem of the tour.

'Too Young To Love'
'Cannonball'
'At War With The Sun'
'Velvet'
'Tonight'
'Dominos'

Bombay Bicycle Club played next, playing a sweat-drenched set, with the crowd yelling for more as the frontman announced that 'Cancel On Me' would be their final song.

'Magnet'
'Open House'
'Dust On The Ground'

They went on to play crowd favourites 'X-Ray' and 'No Kind Words' - augmented by former Talk Taxis frontman Will White on keyboard - before returning for a two-song encore including the Orange Juice cover.

They played a speeded-up version of the 1983 hit single, before they ended their set with 'Love You Better'
