The Maccabees have revealed that their record label were "really worried" that their new album 'Given To The Wild' would be a commercial flop.

The band released the album, which is their third studio effort, last month and saw it enter the Official UK Album Chart at the Number Four spot upon its first week of release (January 15).

However, in an interview with the Daily Star, guitarist Felix White said that their label, Fiction, had expressed concerns that the album would be too experimental to achieve mainstream success.

He said:

Fiction were really worried. They thought we were making a concept album. They were talking about a low-key release. They thought it was going to be this lo-fi, weird-sounding record.

White also said that he and his bandmates had experienced a "sinking feeling" after they narrowly missed out on claiming their first Number One album with with 'Given To The Wild'. The LP had seemed on course to claim the top spot in the midweek rundown but eventually ended up losing out to Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran and Adele.

The guitarist claimed that the disappointment was similar to the dismay he fees following his football team Fulham FC, stating: "We didn't think it would get near the Top 10, let alone nearly hit Number One. It's funny and surreal seeing our name next to Bruno Mars and Adele in the chart. As a Fulham fan, I'm used to last-minute defeats. That sinking feeling when we lost out so late was very familiar."

Last week (January 27), tickets went onsale for The Maccabees' show at London's Alexandra Palace on June 8, which will be the biggest of their career so far. The band will also embark on a mammoth tour in March, playing a 12-date trek around the UK kicking off at Edinburgh HMV Picture House on March 5. It will wrap up at Cambridge Corn Exchange on March 19.
