The Maccabees, Kate Nash, Martha Wainwright pick the saddest songs ever written - watch

A host of artists tell NME their favourite tear-jerkers

Video: What's The Saddest Song Ever?

The Maccabees' Felix White has told NME that he think's Loudon Wainwright's 'Hitting You' is the saddest song ever recorded.

The guitarist joins a host of bands and artists, including Loudon's daughter Martha Wainwright, in telling NME what song is most likely to turn on the water works – you can watch a video featuring Kate Nash, Annie Mac and Major Lazer revealing their chosen sad song above.

Speaking about his favourite tear-jerker, guitarist Felix White said: "I like a lot of Loudon Wainwright's music and he's got a song called 'Hitting You', which is on 'History'. It's about him hitting his son and how much he regrets it. It's just an amazing piece of music. He's not painting himself in any glory; it's just his failings as a human."

Meanwhile, Martha Wainwright picked Nina Simone's 'Nobody' because "it's so sad" and Annie Mac selected Blur's 'To The End' because she associates her "teenage turmoil" with the track. Kate Nash went for The Supremes' 'Stop! In The Name Of Love" as "the lyrics make me feel really sad".

She explained: "I just listened to the lyrics for the first time and it made me sad because I thought about what they meant. The lyrics are all about a girl asking a man to stop cheating on her anymore and asking him to come back to her because she loves him."

Meanwhile, you can stream a playlist of beautifully sad songs - compiled with the help of NME users - below.
