Creator of The Wire writes The Pogues musical The Pogues Tickets
David Simon had reportedly been working on the project with the late Philip Chevron
The Herald writes that Simon has penned the first draft of his tribute to the folk punk band and that it will be staged by The Druid Theatre Company in Galway, Ireland. Simon had worked on the project with The Pogues' guitarist Philip Chevron, who died earlier this year. The Herald writes that it will "take years" before the musical will be staged.
Chevron died aged 56 in October, after being diagnosed with cancer in 2006. He was successfully treated and given a clean bill of health in April 2012. However, another tumour appeared in August of the same year, which doctors deemed inoperable. In a statement released to NME by The Pogues record label, the band said they were "hurt terribly" by the loss of "a remarkable and fantastically talented colleague".
The music of The Pogues featured in The Wire a number of times and Spider Stacy of The Pogues features in David Simon's New Orleans set series Treme, playing a street musician called James 'Slim Jim' Lynch.
