Pete Townshend weighs in on The Police
'They're not classic rock' says The Who man
Pete Townshend has laid into The Police.
The Who guitar legend dismissed the newly-reformed band's inclusion in the 'classic rock' category.
During an interview on New York radio station WAXQ-FM, Townshend said, "They're now calling The Police 'classic rock.' I don't think so. The Police are punk. They're a punk band. They're not classic rock."
Townshend added: "You know, you've got the (Rolling) Stones and The Who. Classic rock - finished. It's all over after that...this is just music. It's not classic anything."
That said, Townshend is reportedly excited about the upcoming Police reunion tour, which is set to kick off in Vancouver in May and will call at several cities around the world.
As previously reported, Townshend delivered the keynote address last week at Austin's South by Southwest Festival, where he made a surprise appearance on stage with The Fratellis.
