The Rakes split up and cancel tour

London four-piece thank their fans for 'one hell of a party'

The Rakes have split up, the band have announced.

In a statement to NME.COM the London four-piece – Alan Donohoe, Matthew Swinnerton, Jamie Hornsmith and Lasse Petersen – announced the immediate break-up of the band.

Both their October UK tour, which was due to kick off at Leeds Cockpit on October 26, and American dates have also been cancelled. Full refunds will be given to ticket holders.

A statement from the band explained that their hearts just weren't in it any more. "The Rakes have always been very adamant and proud of the fact that we give 100 per cent to every gig we've ever played," the statement read.

"If we can't give it everything then we won't do it. That was the rule we set ourselves from day one. After much deliberation we have come to the shared conclusion that we can't give it 100 per cent any more and regret to announce that The Rakes are calling it a day."

The band apologised to their fans for cancelling their UK and US tours.

"Writing your own obituary is a surreal thing to do," they said in the statement. "But we want to give particular thanks to our much-loved fans, all the great people we've worked with over the years, our management and loyal record label.

"We feel privileged to have had the opportunity to write music together and perform around the world. Genuinely, thanks for the good times... that was one hell of a party! But now, we really must get some sleep."

The band formed in 2004 and released three albums – 'Capture/Release' in 2005, followed by 'Ten New Messages' in 2007 and 'Klang' earlier this year.

This is sad news. Great live band and top lads too, they even played our houseparty once! Only criticism I had is that their sound didn't really evolve enough and that may have accounted for the slow record sales.. Best of luck for the future boys.

I'm really annoyed that The Rakes have split up. Out of all the bands that are around why them? They we're by far the best and seemed to be the only ones keeping it real. Every time i saw them they just got better. I was expecting a 4th album. Man, I'm really gonna miss that band. Words can't explain how i feel right now.

Bad news. Really good live. Excellent first album. Sadly the second album wasnt. Third album the lads were back on form. Will be sadly missed.

Please tell me this is a joke. The Rakes can't split up. My young manhood was built on Capture Release. It's a part of what I am. If The Rakes die, a little bit of me will die too.

This is such sad news. What has happened to the great music scene we had in 2003 - 2005. Now the NME talk about bands like Florence and the Machine and Paramore. Music is worse now than when Limp Bizkit were at their peak. The Rakes will be missed.

Can't believe they have split up!!!!They were one of my favourite bands and very under rated. So many of their songs reminded me of my life. I will be playing all 3 of their albums in respect tonight and having happy memories of their live shows
