The Rolling Stones are to perform during the halftime show at the 2006 Super Bowl.

The band, currently touring North America, will play during the interval at Super Bowl XL, which takes place on February 5 at Ford Field in Detroit. The performance will be broadcast live on ABC.

"We are thrilled to perform for millions of fans at one of the most exciting and highly anticipated sporting events of the year," the band said in a statement.

The legendary rockers join the list of famous past performers, who include Paul McCartney, Beyonce, Britney Spears, Aerosmith, Nelly and Kid Rock.

In 2004, Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson's breast-baring resulted in national outcry in the US.

As previously reported on NME.COM, The Stones kick off the European leg of their world tour on May 27 in Barcelona.
