The Rolling Stones perform ‘Hang On Sloopy’ live for first time in 49 years – watch

The band hadn't played the track since 1966 but returned to it at their show in Columbus, Ohio

The Rolling Stones played a track over the weekend they hadn’t aired live for almost 50 years.

Mick Jagger and co performed at the Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday (May 30) as part of their current North American tour. The band ran through ‘Hang On Sloopy’, originally written by Wes Farrell and Bert Russell in 1964 and later popularised by The McCoys. They dedicated it to Ohio State University, whose marching band play it at sports games. The Rolling Stones last performed the track during their European tour in 1966.

The Rolling Stones recently paid tribute to late blues musician BB King during a Twitter Q&A with fans last month (May 18). Jagger and co held their first-ever Q&A on the social networking site ahead the upcoming re-release of their ‘Sticky Fingers’ LP. They were asked by fans for their memories of King.

“I was just looking at a picture of me and BB backstage at Madison Square Garden [in 1969],” Jagger told fans. “He played with us at a lot of gigs on that tour. We last played with him in a blues concert at the White House. It’s sad. He had such a huge, long career. It’s sad that we won’t be listening to him live anymore.”

Keith Richards finished by describing King as “one of the greats”, continuing, “BB was a great guy. He was one of the true gentlemen, and I shall miss him a lot. At least we have his records. Farewell, BB.”
