The Shins have spoken about the US chart success of their album ’Wincing The Night Away’.

The band’s third album debuted at Number Two on the Billboard chart, selling 118,000, and the band were only beaten to the top spot by boy band Pretty Ricky.

Frontman James Mercer said: “What it is, I think, is that we have a large fanbase who have been waiting anxiously and they all bought the record as soon as it came out.

“I expect it to decline pretty quickly - I don’t think we’ll be Number Two next week. But it’s good, it’s fine. Nobody expected the sales to be like this, but we aren’t affected by it. Thus far, we’re doing the same as we ever did.”

Mercer also spoken about the infamous appearance of their song ’New Slang’ in the 2004 film ’Garden State’.

He told The Independent: “The record would’ve probably come out a year ago (but) ’Garden State’ sent us back out on tour. It doubled or tripled the number of people who knew about us. It was such a fluke.”

The band are set to play the Shockwaves NME Awards show on February 25 at London’s Astoria as well as a ‘club’ show the following night at the city’s Bush Hall.
