Smith Westerns confirm split

Frontman Cullen Omori says: 'There's no plans to reignite Smith Westerns'

Smith Westerns have confirmed plans to split, after frontman Cullen Omori announced they were to go on an ‘indefinite hiatus’ last weekend.

In a new interview with The Chicago Reader, Omori explained that the group are set to break-up after their hometown Chicago gig on December 23 as guitarist Max Kakacek has left the band.

“The band just didn’t work,” he said. “Both creatively and personally. The terminology I used, ‘indefinite hiatus’, I thought was a clever way of saying ‘it’s not going to happen in the future’. But yeah, there’s no plans to reignite Smith Westerns. It’s broken up. Me and Cameron [Omori], when Max left the band, we decided we weren’t going to dissolve it until we played these last shows because it sprang up on all of us.”

The group formed in 2007, going on to record three well-received albums, the most recent of which, ‘Soft Will’, was released last year. Earlier this month, Omori said in a series of Twitter posts that the band were going to be taking a break. “Definitely going to be an end of an era at Schubas on the 23rd. If you’re fan and live in Chicago I would suggest getting a ticket,” posted Omori.

“It’s been a cool 7 years and I’m super grateful for everything. Wish some things recently could’ve changed but the 23rd is a last hurrah!” he added.
