The Soft Pack: 'We hated being called The Muslims'

US band say their old name often drew a 'racist' response from people

Hotly-tipped US band The Soft Pack have revealed why they changed their name from The Muslims.

As NME.COM previously reported, the San Diego band announced their new name on their MySpace page last week (November 28), saying that the decision marked a "new chapter" for them.

Now, the group have spoken in more detail about the decision, even going as far as saying they "hated" their original name.

"Why did we change the name of our band? Because we hated it," they said.

"When we started the band, the name meant absolutely nothing to us and grew to become something we couldn't stand. We were disgusted with and exhausted by all of the ignorant, often racist, bullshit that came out of people's mouths during shows/interviews/conversations."

The band also refuted allegations that the name change meant they were selling out.

"I guess there was some confusion as to whether we are 'fucking gay, corporate sell outs'," said the statement. "Don't fret! We are still broke as ever and paying for the band out of our own pockets. Just like back in the day!"

The band added that they are currently working on new songs that they will debut on their next tour, due to be "announced very soon".

Attention-seeking prats! "When we started the band, the name meant absolutely nothing to us and grew to become something we couldn't stand" - so why call yourself that name in the first place? It means nothing to you, but you take the name of a massive religion to represent your music? If you ask me, you picked that name to garner attention!

I agree with Jeppcat. Everyone's band name has a meaning or a story on why they called themselves a certain name. They knew they would get attention and exposure from calling themselves 'The Muslims' which they achieved. I think they are a bunch of losers for doing this stunt.
