Mani says 2009 is the 'ideal time' for The Stone Roses to reunite

Bassist asks fans to 'start the campaign'

The Stone Roses' former bassist Mani has said that he wants the band to reunite in 2009 - 20 years after they released their seminal self-titled debut album.

The bassist, who currently plays in Primal Scream, says that three-quarters of the band are happy to reunite, with only frontman Ian Brown yet to commit.

"Me, John [Squire, guitarist] and Reni [drums] are up for doing it and Ian just needs some working on," he told internet TV site Channelbee.

"Next year is the 20th anniversary of the first album. It's the ideal time to do it. It's something I would love to do before we are all fat and bald. Start the campaign."

As NME.COM reported in July, Mani previously stated that Brown was \"dead set\" against a Stone Roses reunion.

This is a story that I'm torn between, as on the one hand being a Manchester Lad I absolutely love the Stone Roses and due to only being 24 never got to see them play live, but on the other hand some things are better left in the past, and wouldn't want anything to spoil what the Stone Roses means to Music. Without Doubt they are one of the Best British Bands ever and Stone Roses Stone Roses is a fantastic album which still sounds fresh and new every time I listen to it, even though it is nearly 20 years old.

Seeing as it has been 20 years since that magical debut, a couple of shows would be fitting. Obviously they'd have to play a hometown show, maybe one in London and perhaps even Glastonbury (seeing as they had to pull out of it in '95 after John broke is collar bone). I hope they resist the temptation to record any new material though, that would be disastrous.

It would be amazing, but i think the possibility of it happening is about the same as the possibility of The Smiths reforming- zero. Ian Brown has integrity and wouldn't reform the band simply for a massive pay cheque- he has said he despises John Squire so many times, if they have spoken at all in the past few years too much has happened for their friendship to ever be like it was in the first days of The Roses

As much as I'd love to see the Roses live, it'll never happen. Ian Brown said recently that he'd rather work in Tesco than reform the Stone Roses so any reunion would cast the highly principled Brown in a rather hypocritical light. Some things are perhaps better left to rest.

I was at their last ever gig at Reading 1996, it was atrocious. No Squire, no Reni, it was a farce they even performed under the Stone Roses name.If they were to do it it has to be all four of them otherwise it isn't The Stone Roses.

Yeah, I remember their Reading 96 set with Brown painfully howling out of tune and the whole thing being not being how you'd want to remember them by.. Anyone who saw The Monday's last year at Get Loaded would probably also think that reunions are a bad idea for trying to respark that magic that once was...

This really isn't a good idea, I saw their last attempt at Reading 96 and it was the first time i've seen a stampede to get away from the stage. Seriously! It wasn't good, they just don't work live, save us all please!!! If Ian has learn't to sing in tune yet then it might be better.

the roses need to get back together so they can sign off in style. anyone who was at reading 96 or has seen the footage will agree that it was no way for such an influential band to end. Reading was bad for one reason, it WASNT the roses up there!, it was brown and mani with three session players!. get the original four back together, do 3 or 4 big gigs ( including knebworth ) and then good night.
