Ex-Oasis and Beady Eye frontman Liam Gallagher is among a host of stars who have championed the return of Manchester legends The Stone Roses.

The singer took to his Twitter page Twitter.com/liamgallagher to express his delight at the reformation of the original line-up - frontman Ian Brown, guitarist John Squire, bassist Mani and drummer Reni - who announced their return at London's Soho hotel this afternoon (October 18). Gallagher wrote:

[The] Stone Roses getting back together not been this happy since my kids were born... LG.

Other stars including Mark Ronson followed suit, tweeting: "The Stone Roses reuniting is a bigger deal than Led Zeppelin. Strictly for the fact of how improbable it seemed until today."

Reverend And The Makers frontman Jon McClure also declared that "music needs them" right now.

He added: "Right today I'm going to listen to solid Biggie Smalls and The Stone Roses in the studio and have myself a little party."

Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis meanwhile said she was delighted over their return despite her not being able to bring them to her bash in 2012, with the festival taking a year off. "So happy for the Roses, can't wait!" she added.

Bestival organiser Rob Da Bank also championed the band's comeback but he admitted that there was no chance of them playing his Isle Of Wight bash next year.

The Stone Roses announced plans to play two homecoming shows at Heaton Park on June 29 and 30, 2012 before embarking on an extensive world tour. They also confirmed they have been in the studio and are working on new material.
