Tribute campaign for late Stone Roses fan Chris Brahney cancelled

'One Love' Facebook push pulled at the request of fan's parents

A Facebook campaign to get The Stone Roses' track 'One Love' to Number One in tribute to Chris Brahney has been cancelled.

Brahney, who was 22-years-old, went missing after the first of The Stone Roses' shows at Heaton Park on June 29 and was not seen again. His body was discovered on Monday (July 9) by police after being recovered from Manchester's Ship Canal.

In the hours after it was announced that Brahney had been found dead, a campaign was launched on Facebook to get the reunited band's track 'One Love' to Number One to honour Brahney's memory. However, it has now been pulled at the request of Brahney's family. The Stone Roses themselves were not involved in the campaign at any stage.

As well as this, Gary Finch, the man who made headlines after it was revealed he was selling "atmosphere" from the Stone Roses' gig, withdrew the item from eBay as he felt it was no longer appropriate after Brahney's death.

Asked about this by BBC News, Finch said: "It wouldn't be right for me to make money out of it now. I didn't do it to make money in the first place. I did it to catch the atmosphere, I did it for a laugh, I didn't really expect anything to happen, it just took off."

The Stone Roses themselves have also joined the tributes to Brahney, writing on their official Facebook page: "We'd like to extend our sincerest condolences to Christopher's family and friends. Our thoughts are with them at this incredibly sad time." Ian, John, Mani and Reni."

Meanwhile, a post-mortem on Brahney's body has taken place and has been ruled inconclusive. Police are currently carrying out toxicology tests.

Police are now appealing to the public for sightings of Brahney in Manchester city centre in the early hours of June 30. Investigators now believe that Brahney, who had previously been seen at Maccabi Sports Centre near Bury, managed to get into the city centre and picked up shoes that he had bought earlier that day and had hidden in Rosenfields car park.

Detective Inspector Debbie Oakes said: "Officers are continuing to offer support to Christopher's family, and we are trying to give them the answers they so desperately need. The post-mortem examination brought an inconclusive result, but as is routine, samples have been sent for toxicology tests."

She continued: "We do, however, have a number of lines of inquiry that we are vigorously pursuing, including CCTV footage that could help us make more sense of Chris's final movements, information from witnesses following the fantastic public response and other avenues for us to pursue. We understand that Chris walked from Shudehill, past a number of pubs, to Deansgate. Anyone who saw Chris in Manchester city centre, carrying a Primark bag, is urged to call the police as soon as possible."

Liam Gallagher, Primal Scream, The View and The Courteeners have been among those to pay tribute to Chris Brahney over recent days.
