Shane Meadows on why he missed chance to hear new Stone Roses songs – watch

'Made Of Stone' director says he scuppered his chances by showing band a 'rubbish' cut of the film

Shane Meadows, who picked up the Best Film prize at the NME Awards 2014 with Austin, Texas earlier this week (February 26), has revealed that he narrowly missed out on hearing new tracks from The Stone Roses.

Meadows' documentary on the band, Made Of Stone, triumphed at the ceremony at Brixton O2 Academy, but he revealed that he had scuppered his chances of hearing the Manchester group's new material by showing them an early "rubbish" version of his film.

"I nearly heard some new stuff," he said in the interview, which you can watch above. "They were recording some tunes. I turned up and showed them a cut of the film which was a bit rubbish and I lost all my privileges for a bit. On the day when I could have probably heard a couple of new tunes I showed them a really rubbish cut... I was the closest anyone's ever been to hearing new material and I played them something shit and I got demoted."

Other big winners at the NME Awards 2014 with Austin, Texas included Paul McCartney, Damon Albarn, Blondie and Arctic Monkeys.
