Rumours are circulating that The Stone Roses are preparing to split up.

The post first appeared on the I Am Without Shoes Too discussion forum and purports to be based on insider knowledge. The post was reported Louder Than War, the music site run by The Stone Roses' friend and biographer John Robb.

The post, added by a user named HerringBone, reads: "Just had word from a friend who works at Universal Records and announcement will be made next week regarding the bands future. Says the band's representatives and Universal's are working on ending the contract and the guys going their separate ways. According to a band source after all the gigs were finished trying to recreate magic between four very different entities as compared to their earlier incarnation just didn't work. The usual obligatory band statement will conclude with them all remaining good friends and ending for good The Stone Roses."

When contacted by NME, a spokesperson for the band declined to add anything to the rumour, simply saying: "No comment."

The Stone Roses reformed in 2011 after originally breaking up in 1996. They played a series of gigs around the world in 2012 and 2013, but have remained seemingly inactive since the end of the festival season last year. There were rumours the band were working on what would be their third album although there was never any official confirmation of that happening. In June 2013, the documentary The Stone Roses: Made Of Stone, directed by Shane Meadows was released, charting their reformation, triumphant homecoming gigs at Manchester's Heaton Park and beyond.
