Iggy Pop and The Stooges pay tribute to Ron Asheton

Iggy Pop calls guitarist 'my best friend'

Iggy Pop and The Stooges, along with their management and crew, have spoken following the death of Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton.

Asheton was found dead at his Michigan home today (January 6). It is suspected that he died of a heart attack.

A statement issued by Iggy Pop, Stooges drummer (and Asheton's brother) Scott Asheton, saxophonist Steve Mackay, bassist Mike Watt and The Stooges' management and crew reads:

"We are shocked and shaken by the news of Ron's death. He was a great friend, brother, musician, trooper. Irreplaceable. He will be missed.

"For all that knew him behind the facade of Mr Cool & Quirky, he was a kind-hearted, genuine, warm person who always believed that people meant well even if they did not.

"As a musician Ron was 'The Guitar God', idol to follow and inspire others. That is how he will be remembered by people who had a great pleasure to work with him, learn from him and share good and bad times with him.

Iggy Pop added a further personal statement, simply declaring: "I am in shock. He was my best friend."

An official verdict for the cause of Ron Asheton's death is yet to be given.

This is really sad news, he was a true legend! I think alot of guitarists/bands would not be playing if they hadn't heard the stooges. RIP

Ron helped rouse me from an adolescent stupor at an early "Psychedelic Stooges" show in Flint. Michigan in 1967. His guitar playing spoke for me and many others and I will miss him. Thank Ronny for "tellin 'em how I feel".

It's especially sad that he should die now when it's only the past few years that he's been really getting all the recognition, opportunities (and money) he missed out on for so many years. (I remember when The Stooges were interviewed on Jonathan Ross last year, Ron mentioned he'd JUST bought his first ever new car.) And it's sad that he and Iggy went so long not talking or being close, only to have Ron pass away when they got to be best friends again, playing great shows together and really getting along. No wonder Iggy's in shock. It's really really sad.

The chemistry between Scott Asheton, Ron Asheton and Iggy Pop created one of the most special bands of all time .Ron's passing is a crushing loss to music lovers everywhere, but his work on the Funhouse album, easily the greatest rock album of all time, is a monumental statement that will burn incandescent and never be equalled. Thanks for the turn on brother. Peace be with you.
