The Strokes set for Number One

The band are tipped for the top

The Strokes are set to shoot straight to the top of the UK album charts this Sunday (January 8).

According to HMV, the band’s third album ‘First Impressions Of Earth’ - which was released on Monday (January 2) - has been selling twice as much as its nearest rival, James Blunt’s ‘Back To Bedlam’, in its stores.

If the trend continues nationwide, this would prove to be the band’s first ever UK Number One, with their previous two LPs – ‘Is This It’ and ‘Room On Fire’ – both peaking at Number Two.

HMV Head OF Music Phil Penman said: “With most critics agreeing that this album represents The Strokes back to their best form, it was an astute move to release 'First Impressions of Earth' so early in 2006. By topping the charts at this time, the album will have real momentum to perform strongly over the year."
