The Vaccines' Justin Young has admitted that he and his bandmates "hid" behind studio production on their first album.

Speaking to BBC 6 Music, the frontman admitted that although the band had masked themselves using "sonic walls" on their debut LP 'What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?', their new record 'The Vaccines Come Of Age' – which is released on September 3 – was more "stripped-back".

He said:

We hid behind a lot of reverb and walls on the first record. This [new] one's been stripped back, and you can kind of hear that Freddie can play the guitar and Pete can play the drums, and you can hear the character in my voice.

Speaking about the band's progression, meanwhile, he added: "Even though we feel we're a great band, I definitely feel like we're on a journey and we're not as good as we should be and hopefully one day will be. And it just feels like the next step in that direction."

Earlier this week (July 25), Young described the thinking behind forthcoming album track 'I Wish I Was A Girl'. In an interview featured in the latest issue of NME, which is on newsstands now, or available digitally, the frontman said the track was inspired by wanting to be a woman.

"It starts off describing a woman's beauty," he said. "Then when the chorus kicks in you realise 'I don't want to fuck her, I want to be her'. I was wondering if being beautiful made life any easier. I'm pretty sure it doesn't, but it's something I was exploring."

Earlier this month (July 19), The Vaccines unveiled their new single 'Teenage Icon' and its accompanying music video. Scroll down to watch it, and you can also read NME's review of the track now at NME.COM.
