The Vaccines play four new songs as they make live return in Brighton

Band performed new material and old favourites at Concorde 2 last night (January 19)

The Vaccines played a high-energy comeback show at the Concorde 2 in Brighton last night (January 19) to coincide with the premiere of their new single ‘Handsome’.

Previewing four songs from their forthcoming album ‘English Graffiti’, the band tore through a breakneck hour-long set that also included material from their first two albums.

Clad in uniform black, the band threw themselves into a non-stop opening salvo of ‘Blow It Up’, ‘Teenage Icon’ and ‘Wrecking Bar (Ra Ra Ra)’ before singer Justin Young greeted the crowd with a jovial “It’s good to be back, we’ve missed you”. They then lowered the mood with a spooky ‘Ghost Town’ before unveiling the first new song of the night. Entitled ‘Dream Lover’, the seductive glam track was redolent of Arctic Monkeys’ ‘AM’.

A rousing ‘Wetsuit’ had the crowd bawling along before the second new song, the sleazy mid-paced funk of ‘I Want You So Bad’. Following another slew of debut album favourites, Justin apologised for having kept the crowd waiting all night with no support act. “We’ve never played the Concorde 2 before,” he said, “but the last time I was here was years ago and the band I came to see didn’t have a support act… I’m sorry for putting you through two and a half hours of drinking”.

‘Melody Calling’ and the sour ‘Bad Mood’ gave way to a rampant ‘Wolf Pack’ before Young introduced the new single ‘Handsome’. The main set then ended with a raucous rut through ‘I Always Knew’ from ‘Come Of Age’ and ‘If You Wanna’ from 2011 album ‘What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?’.

The two-song encore opened with the last of the new songs ’20/20′, which found Justin singing in a higher pitch than usual for a slick, glossy punk pop effect. The show ended with a storming ‘Nørgaard’, the band heading off to prepare for a second club show at London’s Village Underground tonight (January 20).
