Jack White has been made an ambassador in his hometown Nashville.

The former White Stripes frontman received the the first-ever Music City Ambassador Award at a ceremony in the US city on Saturday (April 16) for his contribution to music.

White was honoured for putting Nashville on the global map over the last 12 months as a result of his music career and his Third Man Records label.

He also demonstrated "commitment to Nashville's unique creative climate and musical diversity," reports spinner.com.

White's Third Man Records company, which was built in 2009 and serves as a record store and production office, is based in the city and the star lives there with his wife, model Karen Elson, and their two children.

"Today's award recognises an individual who carries Nashville's diverse musical message worldwide," said Mayor Karl Dean.

"Jack White's individual talent and unique creative spirit bridges gaps between genres and generations and I couldn't be more pleased to thank him for his work on behalf of the music industry and its hometown."

"Every day we're excited to be in a city that truly fosters local music and businesses and new ideas," White added. "I don't know another town whose mayor is on the board of its music council."
