The Who's Roger Daltrey has invited Olympic gold medal winning cyclist and Mod extraordinaire Bradley Wiggins to join the band onstage.

Wiggins – who became the most successful British Olympic athlete ever in terms of medals won earlier this month, after the 32-year-old won his fourth gold medal at the men's cycling time trial and seventh Olympic medal in total – has also become well-known for his love of indie music, and included The Who in a playlist of his favourite tracks he recently compiled for NME.

Speaking to Shortlist magazine, Daltrey paid tribute to the cyclist – who also became the first Briton to win the Tour de France earlier this year – and said it was an "honour" to know that The Who's music had been an inspiration to him during training.

"I'm just in admiration of the man," he said. "What he's shown the world as a sportsman is something that hasn't been seen for a very long time; his dignity, his humility, his showmanship."

He went on to add:

What an honour to know he was listening to us while training. I think we'll have to get him onstage. He's an honorary guest at any show he wants. He's got a backstage pass for life.

In addition to The Who's 'Heatwave', Wiggns also chose indie classics including The Smiths' 'The Headmaster Ritual' and The Jam's 'In The City' for his NME playlist. You can read the list in full on NME/com/blog.

Earlier this week, meanwhile, Wiggins and fellow Olympian Jessica Ennis attended an intimate Stone Roses gig in London. Singer Ian Brown dubbed the pair "the real King and Queen of England" during the band's surprise show at the Adidas Underground, which was held in support of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
