The Wombats play extended Shockwaves NME Awards Show bash
Murph and co. keep the crowd bobbing at the IndigO2
Taking to the stage at 9:40pm GMT, Matthew ‘Murph’ Murphy and co led a sing-a-long set of crowd favourites including ‘Kill The Director’, ‘Moving To New York’ and ‘Backfire At The Disco’.
“It’s time to let the alcohol enter your bloodstream and lose your inhibitions,” Murphy exclaimed, before leading his band through a rendition of ‘Lost In The Post’.
Later in the set, before playing ‘Moving To New York’, Murphy introduced the band’s trademark mascot, their stuffed wombat Cherub.
“He’s our pirate”, he said, referring to the toy’s taped-on sword and pirate hat. “He’s our bus driver and manager too.”
After leaving the stage for a brief interlude, following a spate of crowdsurfers, The Wombats returned to the stage to perform an encore comprising of ‘Patricia The Stripper’, ‘Backfire At The Disco’ and ‘Let’s Dance To Joy Division’.
The band left the stage after Murphy knocked over his keyboard with a headbut, prompting mass cheers.
