The Wombats 'cover Metallica' at T In The Park The Wombats Tickets
Liverpool band kick off the action at the NME/Radio 1 Stage
The Wombats kicked off the T In The Park festival today (July 11), being the first band to play on the NME/Radio 1 Stage at the bash.
Near the end of the set, singer and guitarist Matthew Murphy told the crowd his band were about to play a Metallica cover, much to the surprise of the audience.
"This is a really slow song," he said. "It's a cover of a song by a band called Metallica, 'Nothing Else Matters'."
However, the band didn't cover a song by the famous rockers, but led into their hit 'Let's Dance To Joy Division' instead.
NME.COM caught up with The Wombats backstage at T In The Park. You can watch the interview by clicking on the link below.
The Liverpool trio were backed up by an enormous inflatable wombat for their set, which they had began in silence.
They attempted to open their show with signature a capella song 'Tales Of Girls, Boys And Marsupials', but their microphones were malfunctioning.
The crowd couldn't hear them sing, but the problem was quickly fixed and the band continued their set. Murphy then yelled, "I think it's fair to say you're ready to rock," before launching into 'Kill The Director'.
"I've been told that T In The Park is the best festival to do," Murphy said before playing 'Lost In The Post'. "I can see why now," he added, much to the crowd's delight.
"Is it fancy dress today?" the frontman later asked, referring to the large amount of impressive costumed on display in the audience. "I can see a Smurf and a human road sign."
The sound problems that affected the opening song resurfaced during 'Little Miss Pipe Dream', with the microphones cutting out mid-song once more.
However, as before, engineers moved quickly to restore sound without the band having to halt.
After the aforementioned Metallica tease The Wombats ended their set with a lively version of 'Backfire At The Disco' in the bright sunlight.
The Wombats played:
'Tales Of Girls, Boys And Marsupials'
'Kill The Director'
'Lost In The Post'
'Party In A Forest (Where's Laura?)'
'Moving To New York'
'Patricia The Stripper'
'Little Miss Pipe Dream'
'Let's Dance To Joy Division'
'Backfire At The Disco'
